“Everyday carry” (EDC) stands for items people carry on a consistent basis to deal with the everyday needs of the modern society. As you know, backpacks are now immensely popular all over the work. How did all this start? Just read below and you’ll know.

Early Stages: Bags and Purses

Even in the earliest stages of civilization, people considered bags and purses as practical everyday articles. Both men and women used them to carry money and other personal items. The thing is that clothes weren’t yet fitted out with pockets.

Bags and purses featured paintings, prints and tapestries. In the museums, you can find historical handbags that were used so many years ago. However, antique bags are rare since ancient people mostly used perishable material to make them.

For example, they used to make bags with clasps, leather pouches and purses with long drawstrings. Only some rare shoulder bags were an exception. People wore them attached to their belt or girdle.

Pockets appeared towards the end of the 16th century. This made men’s bags slowly disappear during the 17th century. Increasingly, bags appeared almost exclusively in the women’s domain.

From the 16th century, women started wearing their purses on a chatelaine. This was a hook with chains, which could be attached with small utensils like keys, knife cases, scissors, and sewing tools. Chatelaine design and accessories changed with centuries. However, they were finally replaced by handbags only in the beginning of the 20th century.

So, their skirts could easily hide one or two bags or “pockets.” Pockets typical of those years were usually worn in pairs. Some would hang from each hip, from where you have the name thigh pockets. Thigh pockets were fashionable during most of the 19th century.

In the 18th century, the Roman city of Pompeii was discovered. Since then, all the things associated with ancient Greek and Roman people gained immense popularity. Classicism also affected women’s fashion to a great extent.

As a result, women started wearing straight dresses, and the waistline moved upwards. These new delicate dresses had no room for thigh bags underneath. So, they started using the reticule, the 1st true handbag, which they were carrying on a chord or chain. These bags were fashionable until the 1st decades of the 19th century. Reticules were handmade, and various fabrics were being used to make them.

During the 19th century, started the age of the Industrial Revolution. Lots of new manufacturing methods and techniques became available. New materials like papier-mâché, iron, and polished steel appeared. They began to be used to produce bags. Thus, new models and designs were created.

Travelers of those times found new bags in the market. These bags helped them travel more easily both by boat and railway. Today’s handbags were created based on the idea of the hand luggage for railway travel used during those times. Those bags were practical not only for travel but for shopping as well.
